SIEPR's Goda joins Newsom's economic advisory council

Gopi Shah Goda is the newest member of the administration's Council of Economic Advisors

Gopi Shah Goda, a senior fellow at the ºÃÉ«App Institute for Economic Policy Research (SIEPR), has been appointed to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Council of Economic Advisors.

The volunteer council — which was formed in 2020 — advises the governor and the state’s finance director on policy proposals for California’s long-term economic growth while deepening relationships between the administration and academic researchers.

research focuses on how policy can best serve aging populations. She studies the sustainability of public programs serving the elderly, and how individuals make health care, saving and retirement decisions as they age.

Her recent research examines the implications of subsidizing medical spending through the tax code, and how COVID-19 illness affects U.S. workers.  Her work has appeared in a variety of leading economics journals, and has been supported by the Social Security Administration, the National Institutes on Aging, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and the TIAA Institute.

³Ò´Ç»å²¹â€™s membership on Newsom’s advisory council is her latest commitment to public service. She served on the Biden Administration’s Council of Economic Advisers from July 2021 through July 2022, and her work has been cited in policy discourse. She works with fellow academics to have their scholarship inform the policymaking process, and  is a founding member of , a collaboration among economists with research and policy experience that aims to help readers develop informed views about economic policy issues. She was also recently appointed to the within the U.S. Commerce Department's Bureau of Economic Analysis.

In addition to her role as a SIEPR senior fellow, Goda is an Associate Professor of Health Policy, by courtesy; and a Professor of Economics, by courtesy at ºÃÉ«App. She is also a Faculty Research Fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research and a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries. 

Goda replaces Susan Athey – also a SIEPR senior fellow – on Newsom’s council.
