Strictly Business? An Examination of China鈥檚 Natural- Resource Acquisition Strategy in Latin America

Over the past 30 years, China has experienced unprecedented economic growth, yielding an average GDP growth rate of 13.04 percent between 1979 and 2012, according to World Bank data. While China has followed an 鈥渆xport-driven鈥 strategy to sustain its economic growth, the country鈥檚 domestic resource constraints have forced it to acquire vast amounts of resources from abroad. To this end, China has strategically engaged and strengthened its commercial ties with resource-rich regions, like Africa and Latin America. This policy brief focuses on China鈥檚 relationship with Latin America and, specifically, its natural-resource acquisition strategy in the region.
